Check for freshness when choosing a tree. If a needle snaps when
you bend it that means that there is a good amount of moisture in the
tree, which is what you want. Although
"Charlie Brown" trees can
be cute, you probably don't want one in your home. |
|
2. |
As soon as you get your tree home, cut ¼ to 1 inch off the base of the
tree and then place it in water. Do not cut it at an angle or in a
"v" shape. When a tree is cut and left for several hours without
water, it forms a seal of sap around the base. The sap prevents
the tree from absorbing water and that is why the base needs to be cut. |
|
3. |
If you need to store your tree for a few days, place it in a bucket of
water in a cool place. |
|
4. |
Don't whittle the side of the trunk down to fit into a stand. The
outer part of the tree is the most efficient in absorbing water and
should not be removed. |
|
5. |
The water you use to fill the stand
should be at room temperature. |
|
6. |
Adding things such as aspirin, sugar, or honey will not assist in
keeping a tree fresh. All it needs is clean, clear water. |
|
7. |
Check the water level daily. After having a tree for two days, you
should know approximately how fast your tree absorbs water and how much
you need to add on a daily basis. |
